Job Description:
Applied mathematicians use mathematical theories and procedures,
like modeling and computational methods, to find solutions and
formulas to business; government; engineering; and physical, life,
and social science problems. Industry relies on applied mathematics
for the design and development of products such as computers, cars,
communication systems, textiles and prescription drugs. Applied
mathematics is at the heart of processes and services such as
supply chains, logistics and production scheduling. Advances in
science and technology in areas such as information technology,
climatology, biological sciences, economic modeling and
environmental emissions modeling, have resulted from the use of
mathematic techniques. Mathematics is the study of the measurement,
properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers
and symbols. Mathematicians use tools such as mathematical theory,
well-defined procedures called algorithms, and the latest computer
technology to solve economic, scientific, engineering, physics, and
business problems. Mathematics is divided into two areas:
theoretical, or pure, mathematics, and applied mathematics.
However, these two areas often overlap. Mathematicians doing
applied work use the theories and laws developed by theoretical
mathematicians. Applied mathematicians solve specific problems in
such fields as physical science, social science, business, computer
science, government, biology, and engineering. They may work in the
electronics industry developing new kinds of computers and
software. Applied mathematicians sometimes study numerical
information about medical problems, such as the effect of a new
drug on a disease. Applied mathematics is a subset of mathematics
where a mathematician uses mathematical principles to solve applied
problems. Business analytics are heavily reliant on evaluating
numerical-based outcomes of business operations. Those in the field
also work with sophisticated models that require an understanding
of logistic regression modeling techniques for application into
loss forecasting and risk strategies. This position is part of a
team that adapts, updates, and integrates software models of
various threat weapon systems and analytic tools into the
Integrated Threat Analysis & Simulation Environment (ITASE), and
perform analytic studies using ITASE simulations in support of the
SCAR Program. All MS&A efforts shall be documented using
formats provided. The ITASE Computer Scientist employs mathematics,
statics, information science, artificial intelligence, machine
learning, network science, probability modeling, data mining, data
engineering, data warehousing, data compression, data protection,
and / or other scientific techniques to correlate complex,
technical findings into graphical, written, visual and verbal
narrative products on trends of existing intelligence data to
leverage other IC data sources. Develops and utilizes machine
learning and data mining algorithms, including, but not limited to,
Multiple Information Model Synthesis Architecture (MIMOSA)
prediction algorithms based on open source capabilities. Integrates
or codes algorithms to support Government intelligence search and
discovery missions. Makes best- practice recommendations on
managing data within hardware, software, storage, and bandwidth
constraints. Employs data science techniques to support predictive
analysis, social media and crowd-source data analytics, wargaming,
and strategy development. Employs exploratory analysis and rapid
iteration techniques of large volumes of data to quickly derive
intelligence. Prepares products to describe and document findings
and activities.BS 8-10, MS 6-8, PhD 3-5TS/SCI w CIP is
