careers.The System Safety Engineer will support the Safety &
Mission Assurance services contract at NASA MSFC supporting the
NASA Spacecraft / Payload Integration and Evolution Office (SPIE)
of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for assisting the NASA
customer in assessing acceptability (insight/oversight) of various
system safety analysis products throughout the entire design,
development, and operational life cycle. Perform hazard analyses of
vehicle and payload hardware across multiple levels of integration;
from the subsystem level up to and including Integrated Element
level.Analyze the design and operations of Space Launch System
(SLS) Vehicle and Payload Accommodations hardware for compliance
with NASA applicable technical and process safety requirements.
Payload Integration analysis. Perform analytical integration of
sub-element and payload hardware to ensure identification of
integration risks are identified, control methods, define and
propose verification methods that will validate controls and
mitigations.Develop and present system safety assessments and
related documents to the SPIE Project and Safety and Mission
Assurance (SMA) Management at project milestones reviews, Table-Top
Safety Reviews (TTSR's), and other technical and SMA reviews in
support of flight readiness and certification.Provide
insight/oversight of contractor Design, Development, Test, and
Evaluation (DDT&E) activities and coordinate Table-Top Safety
Reviews (TTSR's) for contractor developed analytical
products.Perform or assess and document hazard analyses for both
in-house and contracted design and development projects, to assure
that: (a) all hazards are identified and the associated risks
properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy safety
requirements and mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification
requirements are clearly identified, including the clear definition
of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification
status is maintained in a closed loop accounting system.Prepare and
assess Safety Plans (for both assigned in-house and contracted)
design, development, and operational projects to assure compliance
with applicable Agency, Center and Program safety
requirements.
- Assess program or project documentation (e.g., Contractor PWS,
Data Requirements Documents, System Requirements Document, Contract
End Item, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures) to
assure that all safety requirements are addressed in compliance
with Government requirements.Perform hazard control verification
and validation for in-house developed hardware. Further, develop
and present operational hazard control verification evidence to the
Element Safety Verification Board.Assess proposed changes,
deviations, and waivers to program and project documentation to
assure compliance with safety requirements. This assessment
includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses
and the effects on program or project risk. Evaluate and provide
recommendations for acceptance of Non-compliance Reports, and
Requests for Waiver/Deviations. Track to closure all Safety Data
Package (SDP) review comments, Safety Review Action Items and
Agreements.Track and/or monitor the implementation and validation
of hazard controls in accordance with approved hazard reports and
verification plans.Develop and present status reports to upper
management during various program management reviews such as
Certificate of Flight Readiness Review (COFR), Stage Operations
Readiness Review (SORR), and Flight Readiness Review
(FRR)REQUIRED:This position has been posted at multiple levels.

This position requires US Citizenship
due to the sensitivity of customer related information.Must have a
bachelor's degree in the field of engineering, or a related
field.Must have 5+ years of recent and related work
experience.Prior experience in the identification and documentation
of hazards, hazard controls, and proposing methods of
verification/validation.Prior experience in the performance of
Fault Tree Analysis, Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP),
Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes and Effects
Analysis, and/or similar types of system safety engineering
analysisPrior experience in the use of System Safety software
analysis tools such as CAFTA, Saphire, or similar software analysis
tools.DESIRED:
Skilled in working with both
contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project
Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex
safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic
manner.Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes
and procedures is highly desired.WORK LOCATION:
This position offers a hybrid work
schedule; some hours will be remote, and some hours will be in the
