Job Description:
Position OverviewUnder administrative supervision, employees in
this class operate trucks and a limited variety of heavy
construction machinery in the construction maintenance of bridges,
roads, water pipes, and other structures.Employees in this class
are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all
equipment they use, including minor repairs and maintenance.Work is
moderately complex in nature, conforming to the detailed
instructions given by a supervisor, with inspections occurring
during its progress and after completion.Essential Duties and
Responsibilities(All duties listed may not be included in any one
position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of
this class.)Must be able to operate a backhoe, trackhoe,
motorgrader, skidsteer, mini excavator, tractor, and
bushhog.Transports heavy construction equipment using heavy-duty,
tractor-trailers, and haulers including, flatbed and low-boy type
trailers.Performs light maintenance and field repairs on equipment
and machinery as necessary. Loads and unloads equipment and
machinery. Transports materials and equipment to be delivered,
serviced or repaired.Works with crews doing various manual labor
tasks.Performs other related work as required. Education,
Experience, and QualificationsEducation and ExperienceAny
combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of
any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in
the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency
diploma.Knowledge, Skill, and AbilityWorking knowledge of the
traffic laws, techniques, and procedures pertaining to the safe and
efficient operation of trucks and equipment. Skill in the operation
of trucks, wheeled tractors, and other lighter equipment. Skill to
perform basic maintenance tasks. Ability to understand written and
oral instructions.Ability to make judgments regarding
roadworthiness and compliance per D.O.T. regulations. Other
RequirementsPhysical RequirementsMust be able to communicate with
other workers and supervisors, both by radio and in person. Needs
to be able to work in outdoor weather conditions.Needs to be able
to position oneself to stoop, kneel, or crawl on occasion.Must be
able to observe their surroundings.Must be physically capable of
performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions.
Must be able to see well enough to operate motor vehicles and
equipment. Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. Must be
able to pass a D.O.T. commercial driver's physical.Must be
available for 24-hour on-call duty for emergencies within the
assigned district.Certifications or Licenses RequiredMust hold a
valid Commercial Driver's License (or obtain it within six months
of employment) and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's
risk underwriters.Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and
reviewed annually.Must be able to pass a DOT Commercial Driver's
physical and drug screen.Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT
Clearinghouse if you have a CDL license. Work Schedule7:00 a.m. to

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in
accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty
insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.Employee
Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the
Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan
administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA).
Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on
their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have
an accelerated contribution schedule*Employer contribution
percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes

over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay
of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee
