NASA's Mars Sample Return mission will collect rock and soil
samples from the surface of Mars to be returned to Earth for
scientific study. The Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) will play the
critical role of carrying those samples from the Martian surface
into orbit. As a Senior Aerospace Engineer you will help design and
optimize the trajectory, determine system requirements, and conduct
trade studies and analyses for both MAV and a terrestrial test
flight of key components. Initially, your tasks will focus on 3
degree of freedom (3-DOF) trajectories using Program to Optimize
Simulated Trajectories (POST). Future assignments will include
6-DOF modeling and simulation and support for Range Safety analyses
for the terrestrial flight test.
A degree from an ABET-accredited university in Aerospace
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Typically,
educational requirements are the equivalent of a PhD with at least
9 years of experience, an MS with at least 13 years of experience,
or a BS with at least 15 years of experience.
Skills and experience must include:
* Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and independent
problem solving. * Proficiency in technical writing, communication,
and presentation. * Broad knowledge across multiple GN&C
disciplines, including astrodynamics and flight mechanics. *
Advanced experience with modeling and simulation of aerospace
vehicles, including trajectory design, optimization, and analysis.
Experience with POST is desired. * Strong proficiency in
programming, especially with C/C++, Python or MATLAB. * Knowledge
of Monte Carlo, design of experiments, and statistical analysis. *
Experience with flight test programs, especially in the areas of
range safety and trajectory reconstruction, is desired.
