General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

We have an exciting opportunity in our Aerospace Systems Engineering directorate for a full-time Systems Engineering (SE) Manager to lead a team providing SE, specialty engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) support to a variety of aerospace development programs and products. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for multi-disciplinary teams that may be geographically distributed between Huntsville, AL, Centennial, CO, Fredericksburg, VA, and/or San Diego, CA. This position is located in Huntsville, AL.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert systems engineering team leadership for a multi-disciplinary team delivering requirements engineering, MBSE, and risk, issue and opportunity management in support of cutting edge missile, projectile, spacecraft and hypersonic vehicle development
  • As a functional manager, organize, assign and monitor tasking for SE subordinates
  • Collaborate daily with GA and customer engineering and program management teams
  • Lead and support the planning, development and execution of major program technical reviews including System Requirements Reviews, Preliminary Design Reviews, and Critical Design Reviews.
  • Expert application of systems engineering skills and experience, to include:
  • Deep knowledge of requirements development and verification activities
  • Steering identification and capture of customer and other stakeholder needs
  • Guiding collaboration between engineering teams and program/project management
  • Application of MBSE methods and techniques to a diverse portfolio of aerospace development projects
  • Proficiency in developing Operational Concepts
  • Expertise with risk, issue and opportunity identification, management and resolution
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills with and between customers, team members, task leads, functional managers, and program management to facilitate rapid resolution of technical and program issues
  • Serve as the lead systems engineer on one or more missile, satellite, projectile, or hypersonic development projects
  • Make technical presentations during working groups and peer reviews, or to senior management or customers, as required
  • Support development, review, editing, and production of technical documents, digital products, and proposals as required
  • Help subordinates set and achieve professional engineering goals; accomplish annual performance reviews to evaluate their success and identify improvements
  • Mentor less experienced systems engineers in systems engineering best practices
  • Socialize and ingrain Systems Engineering and MBSE into the local engineering team culture and project execution
  • Perform other duties as required

    Job Qualifications:
    • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows: twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree; ten or more years with a masters degree; seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
    • Must have a thorough and broad understanding of engineering concepts and principles, and the ability to apply those concepts to development of cutting edge aerospace systems
    • Solid experience in leading and managing system engineers with diverse levels of engineering experience in complex system development environments
    • Experience with, and understanding of, MBSE methods is required; Experience with Cameo/MagicDraw is highly desirable; The ability to instruct these skills is also highly desirable
    • Demonstrate an understanding of missile, spacecraft, and/or projectile subsystems and the engineering disciplines that support them
    • Success in this position requires consistent application of the following key abilities:

    • Achieving good results and delivering solid products with minimum time expenditure
    • Advanced leadership and management skills; able to direct a team to accomplish a variety of SE tasks concurrently

    • Able to collaborate as part of a team, as well as accomplish tasks independently with minimal direct supervision
    • Rapid and effective problem solving
    • Skilled in mentoring, training, and professional development of SE staff members at varying experience levels
    • Experience using requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama, CORE etc.) is highly desirable
    • Experience developing inputs to proposals, white papers, and requests for information (RFIs) is highly desirable
    • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is desirable
    • Able to work extended hours as required
    • Travel expectation: 10 - 25%
    • Must possess active DOD Secret security clearance with ability to obtain Top Secret if required
