Position Overview

Under general direction, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, medium truck, heavy truck, and heavy equipment. Oral and written instructions are received as to the nature of the work to be performed. Work is checked and/or tested upon its completion. The employee is required to diagnose and repair independently of any technical supervision while making on-the-road repairs. Work is checked and/or tested upon its competition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)

  • Performs repairs on trucks, automobiles, tractor mowers, and some pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Lines and adjusts brakes, repairs, and installs fuel pumps, generators, and carburetors.
  • Tune and adjust motors, align front ends, replace springs and shock absorbers, changes tires, and greases equipment.
  • Overhauls automobiles and trucks which includes repairing and installing wiring systems, motors, main bearings, crankshafts, piston rings, steering systems, wheel systems, brake systems, instrument panels, transmissions, clutch assemblies, differentials, dumping mechanisms, and any other defective parts.
  • Interacts with vehicle/equipment operators to help determine service and repairs needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of all county vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs field repairs of vehicles as necessary, including during adverse weather/environmental conditions.
  • Performs routine welding and fabrication work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnosis and repairs of computer-controlled systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspensions, drive train components, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, gasoline, and diesel-powered engines, HVAC systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Rebuilds engines, disassemble and reassemble motor blocks.
  • Replace and adjust bearings, crankshafts, rods, valves, camshafts, oil pumps, flywheels, and clutch assemblies.
  • Operates special machine tools used in engine block boring, valve seat refacing, and valve grinding.
  • Repair, rebuild and install carburetors, generators, starters, and magnetos.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational and training opportunities. Education, Experience, and Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
    • Two years minimum experience in the repair of automotive equipment. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
      • Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation of automotive and other gasoline-powered equipment; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient repair of internal combustion equipment and in the safe and efficient use of mechanic's tools and equipment.
      • Working knowledge of the principles of operation of heavy construction and other diesel-powered equipment.
      • Skill in the use of modern equipment and resources in automotive equipment.
      • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
      • Must have the physical ability to perform heavy lifting of up to 150 lbs. and to work in awkward positions.
      • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
      • Ability to diagnose mechanical defects accurately and make necessary repairs to equipment in a timely manner.
      • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
      • Must safely operate and maintain assigned equipment and tools.
      • Ability to learn, understand and apply pertinent rules, regulations, and county policies and procedures.
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with co-workers.
        Other Requirements

        Physical Requirements
        • Work is performed indoors and outdoors, and employees may be subject to extreme temperatures, adverse weather conditions, and high noise levels.
        • Work is performed around machinery and equipment and risks exposure to traffic hazards, electrical currents, adverse weather conditions, noise extremes, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dust, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations.
        • Must be available for 24-hour on-call duty for emergencies within the assigned district. Certifications or Licenses Required
          • Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.
          • Class B CDL or obtain Class B CDL required within 6 months of hire date.
          • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.
          • Must be able to pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screen.
          • Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you have a CDL License.

            Dental Coverage: Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

            Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

            Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

            *Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

            Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
